Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 7.1. 191-213. This study analyses the change of the vowel harmony in Korean within the theoretical framework of Optimality Theory. To discuss the vowel harmony in Korean it is worthwhile to review vowel system at several stages of the Korean language. We show that the vowel harmony in Korean is the vertical harmony. The vertical harmony will be discussed in relation to vowel system in Korean. As most of the Altaic languages to which Korean seems to belong have vertical harmony, it is likely that the vertical system is agreeable to Korean. We show that the vowel harmony process is achieved by employing Align-R, Ident-IO(back) and Ident-IO(high) constraint, and that the vowel harmony change is the result of the interaction between Align-R and Ident-IO(F) constraints.
